The area surrounding Prestwood and the Churnet Valley is steeped in history with much for you to see and explore.
From farming implements found from Neolithic times, through battles between kings in the middle ages, the revolution of the roundheads and Cromwell, to the industrial age and modern day. The Churnet Valley certainly has a story to tell.
Although some places are accessable by car to discover much of the Churnet Valley's hidden history you will need to cycle or walk.
Croxden Abbey, rumoured to be where King John’s heart is buried, was founded by the Cistercian Order of Monks in 1179. Croxden is the most spectacular abbey site in Staffordshire with more remains left at Croxden than any other monastic site in the county.
