history of the Area

Local History

The area surrounding Prestwood and the Churnet Valley is steeped in history with much for you to see and explore.

From farming implements found from Neolithic times, through battles between kings in the middle ages, the revolution of the roundheads and Cromwell, to the industrial age and modern day. The Churnet Valley certainly has a story to tell.

Although some places are accessable by car to discover much of the Churnet Valley's  hidden history you will need to cycle or walk.

Croxden Abbey

Croxden Abbey
Croxden Abbey, rumoured to be where King John’s heart is buried, was founded by the Cistercian  Order of Monks in 1179. Croxden is the most  spectacular abbey site in Staffordshire with more remains left at Croxden than any other monastic site in the county.
access by car, cycle or foot

Alton and Surrounding Area

The village of Alton is easily accessable from the farm by foot, cycle or car being approximately 3 miles away.

I found these videos made by peterglynfilms about The history and legends of Alton and the area surrounding it.
He's really enthusiastic about his subject and knows a lot about the local history.....really interesting and well worth watching :-)

more to come about Alton soon...

Extra things .....

This page is currently being researched! (July 8th 2011) The more i find out about the local history the bigger it gets and so on and so on!!!
There is so much more to come,
In the meantime i'll post random things as and when i find them and eventually arrange them into a workable order!...enjoy for now...
