CAMPing

camping at farm on the hill

Our small secluded eco-campsite is set within 12 acres of woodland and meadow on the edge of the pretty hamlet of Prestwood on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border.
With a mix of pitches ranging from private 2 person spaces set within their own clearing to larger spaces perfect for family groups and friends, you'll find Farm on the Hill to be the perfect place from which to explore the surrounding countryside, whether it be by bike, foot or car.
That's if you decide to explore at all of course... you could just set up base, get your cooking pot over the fire and relax with a book ( a good supply can be found on the shelves in the shower).

The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden, (formally called 'the copse' for all those that have been before), is a hidden space surrounded by tall hedges and mature trees (see photos above). There is a large stone fire pit perfect for sitting around with friends and family and watching the stars as they shine through the tree tops above. This pitch can comfortably accommodate 5 tents of average size and is often hired out for group bookings.
Another pitch just through the hedge can easily be included with this space, this additional pitch can accommodate up to 2 tents, with incredible views overlooking the Churnet Valley this is perhaps the most perfect place to sit and watch the sunset.

Hammocks

For those of you looking to sleep under the stars, there are conveniently spaced trees in the Secret Garden that can be used to string hammocks between.

Meadow and woodland camping pitches

These pitches have a completely different feel to them. Surrounded by young trees and abundant with wildflowers, these spots are constantly changing, the trees growing, the flowers changing, there is such a feeling of aliveness.
Small, mown clearings are scattered around the woodland and throughout the meadow, complete with picnic tables and stone fire circles, creating some truly beautiful pitches.
Camping in a woodland clearing or in the wildflower meadow itself, with its views across the rolling Staffordshire hills is an experience not to be missed.
Although many of these pitches are perfect for 1 or 2 tents, the South Meadow is perfect for a larger group gathering. This is a sunny spot with great views over the Churnet Valley.

Camper vans

Although mainly a tent site, we do have a couple of places where camper vans (of a VW size) can stay. These pitches also come with stone firepits. Due to the wild nature of the site, these pitches are weather dependant, so please enquire in advance.
Please note that none of our pitches have electric hook-up.

Campsite Facilities

All camping pitches have shared use of facilities, which include a compost long-drop toilet, a solar shower and a wood-fired sauna.
The shower is heated by the sun via a solar water heater on the outside of the building. The water heater also heats hot water for 2 outside sinks, situated on the outside of the shower hut. On dull days, the water can be heated up via a wood-burner in the sauna part of the building. This can take up to an hour, so we suggest you enjoy a sauna while you wait, and then appreciate the shower afterwards. That way, you may also be grateful that it never really achieves 'hot' in the conventional sense of the word. If you're looking for scorching hot water and a power shower, this site may not be for you, but if you're looking for a shower adventure you're definitely in the right place!

Campfire camping

Picture
There is nothing like a campfire at the end of a day spent in the great outdoors, whether you cook your tea on it, huddle around it to spin a good ol' yarn, or just use it to stay toasty while you watch the amazing star-studded night sky.
Therefore, every pitch has its own firepit, and we sell wood, firelighters and matches on site.
(For those of you who are new to fire building, we are always happy to lend a hand...)

Additional on-site and on-farm facilities

In addition to the above mentioned compost toilet, shower, sauna and fire circles, there are also:
  • barbecues available on-site for you to use (please bring your own charcoal)
  • a small library of books and reference/identification guides which can be found on the shelves in the shower
  • handouts of local walks available
  • seasonal nature-hunt/activity sheets for the young explorer
  • onsite mountain and road bike mechanic
  • easels and painting materials available for hire (by prior arrangement)
  • Cycle Hire available from the farm, on a beautiful traffic-free cycle route through the valley

Camp Site Guidelines

Our campsite is set on the edge of a small village. We expect that all campers will respect the environment and people around them, not litter either the site or surrounding area, and not making excessive noise during their stay. In order to prevent this from occurring, we do not allow generators or music systems on site.

As this is a site that welcomes young families, we ask that campers are quiet from 11pm onwards. Quite often the nights can be so still here that laughter around a campfire can carry right around the field, so we ask that campers only laugh in whispers after 11pm... Thankyou.

Are dogs allowed?

No Dogs Policy unless the whole site is privately hired.
We now have a no dogs on-site policy for the campsite.
This allows us to ensure the safety of campers and provide a relaxing environment for all. This also ensures that the site is kept as clean as possible.

We hope you understand our reasoning on this, and please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause.

If you are privately hiring the whole site then we do still accept dogs.
If dogs are part of a private hire we ask that they are kept on a lead, and that all mess is cleared up and placed in the bins provided in biodegradable bags. These are available to buy from reception.

Arrival and departure times

Arrival is anytime from 2pm onwards and departure is by 12pm on the day that you leave.
However we do try to be as flexible with this as possible, so if you would like to either arrive earlier or leave later, please let us know and we will do our best to work this for you.
If there is no one booked into your pitch the day that you leave, you are very welcome to stay and enjoy the space as long as possible.
