however when we returned to the field we has a little surprise on our hands...
the ground had been so wet when we planted the trees that all the walking back and forth while planting had caused it to cake and the following couple of weeks of sunshine then led to the surface 'cracking'....leaving a rock hard surface full of crevices , totally unsuitable for sowing seeds on!
and not at all easy to rake! but rake it is what we have been doing and are still doing! it takes quite a long time to rake a 12 acre field, even with friends like i have! :-)
Just like everything though its worked out perfectly, turned out to be a good thing. The raking is providing a perfect seed bed, better than we had before, and its given us the chance to rake out stones from particularly stony parts exposed by the deep ploughing. All perfect as always! :-)
we have sown a couple of acres so far and plan to sow more over the next few days...job on!!!!
here are a few photos of progress so far....the wonderful seed fiddle has been made especially for the job by my grandad and uncle, people are amazing! Its a truly wonderful and beautiful looking tool, a copy of the one my grandad used to use years ago, when hand sowing was the norm, and has made the sowing possible... and i would have found the task much much harder without it...thankyou so much to them xxx
